“The Hands on Gang is a great way to bring five very different venues together to communicate the single message that museums are fun for families”
Emma Parsons
Project Manager, Preston Museums Consortium

A joint marketing campaign to attract families and increase footfall to Preston’s five museums and galleries.
Read moreThe brief was to develop a single creative concept and campaign that would help position each of the different museums within the Consortium – Harris Museum & Art Gallery, Museum of Lancashire, National Football Museum, Queen’s Lancashire Regimental Museum and Ribble Steam Railway – as fun places for families to visit.
The solution was the Hands On Gang, five colourful and eye-catching finger puppets that represent each of the museums, creating a kind of friendship group that kids could identify with. Each member of the Gang has a different personality and interest in keeping with the nature of the individual museum or gallery, such as Frankie the Footballer for the National Football Museum and Annie the Artist for the Harris Art Gallery.
At the heart of the campaign is a website where visitors can meet the Hands On Gang and find out more about the museums and forthcoming special events. A local and regional advertising campaign helped drive traffic to the site, whilst at each venue Hands On Gang activity points and trails were created in order to engage families with the exhibits and the museum experience.
