“The timing of the War Horse movie was too good an opportunity for us to miss, so we deliberately created an illustration route for the campaign that we felt would be a gift for digital animation.”

A 'big screen' campaign to promote IWM North's exhibition about powerful wartime stories for children.
Read moreOnce Upon a Wartime is an exhibition exploring five powerful books for children and the true stories and events that inspired them.
The campaign approach was based around a set of illustrations, created in-house, depicting key scenes from three of the books featured in the exhibition: War Horse, The Machine Gunners and Carrie's War. The exhibition opening coincided with the launch of Steven Spielberg's film War Horse, based on Michael Morpurgo's classic story, and so part of the media campaign for the exhibition was to develop a cinema advert to be shown in advance of War Horse screenings across the North of England.
Working with creative studio The Neighbourhood, we developed the campaign approach into a 20-second cinema advert by animating the campaign illustrations with added sound effects to convey the drama of the scenes depicted. In addition, the campaign runs across outdoor, direct mail, press and online advertising as well as featuring on a specially wrapped Metrolink tram to promote the ease of getting to the exhibition via the new Media City UK stop.
