Shaped by War: Photographs by Don McCullin was the largest exhibition ever held in the UK about the life and work of this legendary photographer.

It contained over 200 photographs, objects, magazines and personal memorabilia, and showed how war has shaped the life of this exceptional British photographer and those across the globe over the last half-century.

The sheer breadth of Don's work was almost impossible to capture across the 500 square metres of Imperial War Museum North's Special Exhibitions Gallery, so we devised a touchscreen that allowed visitors to explore deeeper into his life story, and the political contexts within which he worked.

We were also able to show many more of his photographs digitally, and present his work alongside a timeline of technological development and photographic practise.

The design used the visual language of film rolls and lens typography to allow visitors to navigate through Don's life and work.
